The Vanduul are a sentient, spacefaring species of large bipedal aliens and one of Humanity's greatest adversaries. Nomadic by nature, the Vanduul have no permanent settlements — they live, travel, and die aboard their ships, harvesting planets for resources before moving on. Key Dates: • 2681 — First Contact: On August 9, 2681, Vanduul raiders attacked the human settlement of Dell Township on Armitage in the Orion system, killing 638 colonists. This violent first encounter set the tone for all future relations. • 2712 — Battle of Orion: On February 2, 2712, a massive Vanduul fleet led by a Kingship attacked Orion, bombarding Orion III (Armitage) with anti-matter bombs and devastating the planet. • Post-2712 — Retreat from Virgil: After continued Vanduul aggression and the bombardment of Cyrene, the UEE abandoned the Virgil system entirely. • 2871 — Fall of Caliban: The Vanduul overran the Caliban system, pushing the frontier of human-Vanduul conflict deeper into UEE territory. • 2945 — Vanduul War Declared: On November 11, 2945, following the devastating Attack on Vega II, the UEE Imperator officially declared war on the Vanduul. Society & Culture: Vanduul society is meritocratic with no central government. Each clan operates independently under the leadership of its strongest warrior. At adulthood (around age 13-14), Vanduul children are banished from their clan with nothing but a knife, forced to prove themselves worthy of joining a new clan. There is no hereditary wealth or inherited status — everything must be earned through combat and achievement. The Vanduul control at least 16 known star systems. They can survive brief exposure to the vacuum of space. They have no known religion but greatly admire individual achievement and martial prowess. Diplomacy: • Banu — The Vanduul maintain a precarious but mutually beneficial trading relationship with the Banu, exchanging goods at border systems. • Xi'an — The Vanduul view the Xi'an as manipulators and maintain hostile relations. • Humans — All diplomatic attempts by the UEE have failed. The Vanduul regard Humans as invaders of their territorial space.
